Carolyn received her Ph.D. from Columbia University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in 1991, with an emphasis in marine geophysics. Prior to assuming a science coordination role with the IRI in 1997, Mutter was an assoicate research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. She undertook more than ten ocean research cruises, including ocean drilling research, as participant and co-principal investigator. She has served as an Adjunct Professor at Barnard College, as a member of the US Science Advisory Committee, and as a co-chair for Columbia's commission on the status of women. Since joining the IRI in 1997, she has participated in science program development, coordination, infrastructural support, and management. Carolyn commenced her present role as assistant director for science management in early 2001.
Role at the IRI
Carolyn serves the IRI at the behest of the Director General. She provides planning, implementation, coordination, and reporting of numerous initiatives and activities of the institution. This includes support of staff and career processes, for which she provides good practice guidance for a range of evaluation processes, whether associated with initial searches or career development. Carolyn serves as a member the IRI management team. She is chair of the IRI working groups on human resources and career development and is a member of the working group on education, training, and outreach. Carolyn liases with Columbia's Climate and Society Masters Program, working with students to find useful roles with good mentors. She supervises Rise Fullon (Project Coordinator), Francesco Fiondella (Communications Officer), and Jason Rodriguez (Draftsman 1 - WWW and Print Design and Production). She participates in budget review and planning processes. She is available to help any staff member with any concern.
