Background
Lareef Zubair
received a B.Sc from the University of
Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1987 and a M.S and a Ph.D. from Yale
University, U.S.A. in 1989 and 1993 respectively. Prior to arriving at
the IRI at the end of 1999, he was a Post-Doctoral Associate in
Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering at Yale University, a Senior Lecturer in
Environmental Engineering at the
University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, a Research Fellow in
Computational Mathematics at the
Institute of Fundamental Studies, Sri Lanka. He serves as a
visiting faculty member for post-graduate courses
in Water Resources Management, Environmental Science and Engineering,
Atmospheric Sciences, Oceanography, Energy, Climate and Society in
several Universities apart from Columbia University. He also serves as
as a senior advisor at the
Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology. Finally, he
serves as an associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Energy Engineering.
Research Interests
He is interested in tropical climate, climate impacts and adaptation,
and in the application of climate information. He researches aspects of
equatorial Indian Ocean and Southern African climate, hydroclimatic
predictions and climate and hydrological change. He is also interested
in technology and modernization in third world countries. A report on
his work was published in the Earth
Institute website.
Role at the IRI
At IRI, he has managed projects to use climate
information for
water resources and environmental management , to assess climate
impacts on
Human-Elephant-Conflict , to assess natural hazard
risks and vulnerability , to assess climate impacts on
rice cultivation, to assess impacts and propose adaptations
measures to Climate Change and Variability in the
Plantation Agriculture sector. He is Principal Investigator on a
project to study climate impacts on vector-borne disease transmission
and to develop an early warning system for Malaria risk
and on projects on land surface modeling. He has also contributed to
projects on emerging infectious diseases, rain water harvesting, energy
conservation, renewable energy and education in sustainable development
and environment. Feature stories on the project work on disaster
risk, malaria
and plantations
are available.
