Development of a Fire Early Warning System Using Climate Information and Institutional Mapping toward Fire Early Response - ID:101

Project Description

Contribute to the development of early action systems for improved fire management in the peatlands of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, including the identification of how climate information could be best integrated into decision-making

Goals and Objectives

Goal: As part of the Central Kalimantan Peatlands Project (CKPP), contribute to efforts to protect and restore degraded peatlands in Indonesia through fire prevention and related poverty reduction

Project objectives:(1) Investigation of the links between climate anomalies and fire hotspots in Central Kalimantan; (2) development of a tool to provide seasonal early warnings of fires; and (3) assessment of opportunities to use this early warning, in combination with appropriate policy actions, to help reduce fire impacts.

Outputs

• A seasonal early warning tool revised for accessibility and translated into Bahasa
• Assessment of the performance of the seasonal early warning tool over past years
• Fire Danger Rating System validated for use in the Central Kalimantan region for weather-scale early warning
• Stakeholder workshops in Central Kalimantan for tool development and training (Nov. 2007; May and June 2008)
